2014 Pinot Noir - Cargasacchi Vineyard, Sta. Rita Hills

94+ Points - The 2014 Cargasacchi offers up fragrant lavender, Provence herbs and damp earth scents over a core of Bing cherries and wild strawberries with hints of tree sap and cinnamon stick,  The medium bodies palate gives a solid frame of grainy/chewy tannins and lively acid backing up the intense red berry and earthy layers nicely, finishing with great persistence.  Anticipated maturity 2018-2028. - Lisa Perotti Brown - The Wine Advocate

90+ Points - The 2014 Cargasacchi is a big, rich, concentrated, even structured Pinot Noir that 's going to need short term cellaring.  Black cherry, leather, dried earth and underbrush flow to a medium-bodies, concentrated, tannic Pinot Noir that has considerable depth and length - Jeb Dunnuck (June 2017)

90 Points -   The 2014 Pinot Noir Cargasacchi Vineyard is powerful and intense, but also hearty and rough around the edges, especially in its tannic profile.  There is good depth but not has much finesse...Anticipated maturity 2018-2024 - Antonio Galloni, Vinous (Sept. 2017)

Tasting notes

Matt’s Tasting Notes: Wild and savory aromatics typical of Cargassachi vineyard, with weight and pure fruit flavors on palate.  This complex wine has distinct ‘polarities’ (which I love!): soft/rich, yet structured and serious; savory/spicy up front, but pure and lush fruit on palate.  Interesting and really tasty.

Production notes
  • Grapes were hand-harvested from Cargasacchi Vineyard from the same 5 rows of clay soil
  • 50% whole cluster fermentation in small lots (2 tons)
  • Like always, we relied on the native yeast that the grapes carried from the vineyards to complete the fermentation
  • We hand punched each fermentor twice a day to enhance the extraction of colors, tannins and flavors
  • After primary fermentation was complete we extended maceration for up to 30-35 days to further extract color, tannins and flavor
  • Pressed with ultra-gentle stainless steel basket press in an 8-hour cycle
  • Aged in 30% new French oak for 22 months prior to bottling, no fining or filtering with two rackings before bottling.and then another year in bottle prior to releasing.
