Tasting notes

"Glass staining violet. Expansive aromas of smoke-tinged dark fruits, potpourri, allspiceand minerals along with a hint of white pepper that builds in the glass. Round and denselypacked boysenberry and bitter cherry flavors given lift and spine by the juicy acidity of the3% co-fermented Roussanne. Unfolds slowly on the penetrating mineral driven and insistentfinish with building tannins and a whiplash of intense blue fruit." - Matt Kettmann,  Wine Enthusiast

Production notes

Hand-harvested grapes. 100% whole cluster fermentation in small lots (2 tons). Like always, we relied on the native yeast that the grapes carried from the vineyards to complete the fermentation. We hand punched each fermentor twice a day to enhance the extraction of colors, tannins and flavors. After primary fermentation was complete we extended maceration for up to 30-35 days to further extract color, tannins and flavor. We pressed with ultra-gentle stainless steel basket press in an 8-hour cycle. Aged in neutral oak for 18 months prior to bottling, no fining or filtering with two rackings before bottling.and then another year in bottle prior to releasing.

91 Points - The Wine Advocate

Medium garnet-purple colored the 2015 Santa Barbara County Syrah gives pretty kirsch, red currant jelly and black rasberry notes with Chinese five spice, Sichuan pepper and forest floor in the undercurrent.  Medium-bodied, the palate had bags of red and black fruit flavors and impressive hramony, framed by approachable, rounded tannins and finishing with pepper and spice suggestions. - Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate

90 Points - Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2015 (Santa Barbara County Syrah) is a gorgeous appellation level wine, not to mention absolutely delicious. Black cherry, plum, lavender, licorice, spice and menthol give a juicy, flavorful feel. Most of the fruit is destemmed which adds to the wine’s forward appeal.
