2020 Gamay - Shokrian Vineyard, Santa Barbara County
92 points - Matt Kettmann, Wine Enthusiast, Editor's Choice
Our first vintage of Gamay comes from Shokrian Vineyard off of Cat Canyon Rd in Santa Maria. This Gamay is lightly handled in the cellar with the intention of creating a delicate and intentionally soft wine, and we are so happy with the result! This wine is not short on complexity, however, with a nose almost reminiscent of Pinot Noir: candied cherries, Dr. Pepper cola notes, with savory, spicy earthiness and incredibly soft tannins. For us, this wine checks all the boxes of a crushable summer red wine. -Matt Brady, Winemaker
Production notes
We destemmed 80% of the fruit, and left 20% whole-cluster. We fermented for 14 days on the skins with no punch downs or pumpovers with native yeasts. We then pressed to 100% netural French oak barrels and aged 6 months, bottling the Gamay unfined and unfiltered on March 22, 2021.

"The 2020 Gamay Shokrian Vineyard has a medium ruby color and gregarious aromas of pomegranate, cranberry, orange oil and bitters with earthy undertones. The light-bodied palate is bright and spicy with crunchy, approachable fruits and gently rustic tannins anchoring the finish." -Erin Brooks
