There's extreme, maybe even obscene, amounts of cracked black pepper on the savory nose of this cool-climate expression, which comes from the same 12 rows each vintage. There are also scents of roasted beef, asphalt and a pinch of lavender. The pepper character coats the palate too, diced by lively acidity. Elegant, meaning bright and fresh with notes of red fruit; cranberries, raspberries, and pomegranate, with more savory, umami, and wild flavors and aromatics behind the red fruit. Light bodied, fine tannin and bright acid give this wine length, focus, and a long finish. The 2017 Cargasacchi Vineyard Pinot Noir is crunchy and fun and drinking well right now.

Las Hermanas Vineyard sits to the west of the Melville Estate Vineyard, just 8 miles from the ocean. It is planted on over six different soil types, all of marine origin. SAMsARA’s four rows of clone 115 Pinot Noir are located towards the top of the vineyard, where it is well-drained and aggressively sloped. This wine showcases loads of peppercorns, wild thyme, tobacco and pine-needle aromas ride across crisp raspberry fruit on the nose of this bottling by winemaker Matt Brady. Those herbal flavors dominate the palate as well, where wild chaparral tones meet with crunchy cranberry fruit. - Matt Kettmann
